Even without the acute decision making skills necessary to be an adult, with proper adult GUIDANCE adolescents can learn much more through their own actions than if someone does everything for them till they are ready to go out on their own. While they may not be fully developed, they are sheltered from any real responsibility and accountability. We end up with a bored, entitled, and often self centered youth population. Rachel (10) is volunteering at the YMCA every Saturday helping babies and toddlers learn how to swim. While she's not getting paid, she treats it like a job. It's taught her responsibility and the joy of investing your time in others. Think of the youth that you know that has some sort of job (paid or other) as a young teen and think of those that have no responsibilities... or those kids who for whatever reason have to take responsibilities in their families, raising younger siblings, tending to sick parents, etc... there's a stark difference. Duh. Therefore, many of their decision-making skills are not dependable....regardless of how their environment and training at home or school is. They are not physically capable to act as adults until after their adolescent years. I have also read articles about this but can't remember the sources.
